Protect seedlings and early growth stages by planting only seed that has been commercially treated with a fungicide/insecticide combination.
Plant Nexera® varieties in a warm, moist, firm seedbed; planting no more than 1 inch deep; 3/4 inch is preferred.
Canola emergence is very dependent upon a moist, firm seedbed and a planting depth not exceeding 3/4 inch. Typical emergence varies from 60 percent to 80 percent. Seeding rates of 14 to 17 seeds per square foot should result in adequate stands. Stands of four plants per square foot can still result in normal yield due to the exceptional ability of canola to compensate by increasing branching.
Helix® Vibrance® seed-applied insecticide should provide protection against flea beetle for a 21-day window. Begin monitoring prior to the end of this window. Apply an insecticide if infestation levels are significant and the plants are not robust enough to outgrow feeding damage.
Follow label directions for the proper timing and rates for the use of BEYOND® herbicide.
Use information provided by the White Mold Risk Map to aid in determining the need for a fungicide treatment and proper timing.
Monitor fields for the presence of bertha armyworms, diamondback moths and lygus bugs. Consider the application of insecticides if the economic threshold has been reached.
If swathing, monitor fields closely in the fall, and time swathing to occur when the majority of the plants have reached 70 percent seed color change.
Most hybrids can be direct-harvested. A good seedbed and properly adjusted seeder help ensure a uniform stand and even drydown at maturity. If crop maturity is variable, consider the use of a desiccant. Begin harvest with seed moisture at 8 percent to 10 percent moisture; stems may still have a greenish tinge. When the standing canola is ready to harvest, doing so is the most important activity on the farm.
Consider the application of Sonalan® herbicide as a preplant treatment to control ALS-resistant and glyphosate-resistant kochia.
